2019 Channel Week
Clean sweep for Simon Mitchell on Roxanne

A pretty dismal forecast put of some entrants from the start line, and changed the schedule of events, but the 6 boats that completed the Week had a great time with the bonhomie making up for the wet and windy conditions. 3 races were completed and 3 races won by Simon Mitchell on Roxanne.

A typical mix of SORC competition and cameradie, Channel Week 2019 was an August onslaught against wind, seas and rain with a bit of sunshine in between.

Race Director Donald Macdonald had a tough  job picking weather slots to get the fleet safely across The English Channel, and around the Cherbourg peninsula towards the Channel Islands  then  back home in the week. A series of deep low pressure systems conspired to limit the options, leading to a delayed start and an early return to avoid the worst of the heavy weather.

All skippers coped well with the conditions which saw winds into the low and mid 30kts at times.

Cherbourg was the chosen destination for race 1 after a CSB start wind built to a fast 70 to 110 TWA  jib/ code zero finishing with the usual tidal approach into the finish at the Eastern entrance.

Race 2 was a dash round Cap de La Hague,  through  the Alderney Race to Dielette on a deepening reach to the finish within sight of the nuclear power station.

Race 3 to Guernsey was canned due to the next heavy blow from the west.

An extra day in Dielette was spent avoiding rain, Steve Thomas went running on the beach and others just had a long lunch..

The return leg was brought forward to outrun the next expected low.

An early start out of Dielette into lumpy seas and a lively Alderney Race going North fired the fleet back into the English Channel with  20 - 30 kts at 100-125 TWA pushing them homeward at speed. Sunfast 3200 Roxanne  enjoyed the conditions chasing Azora to the finish at North Head in just 8.5 hours, taking a hatrick win on corrected time.

A prize giving dinner at Royal Lymington completed another unique and  challenging but most enjoyable SORC Channel Week.

As Steve suggested, next  year let's  try to do it in the 'Summer'.
